Shakuntala Devi (2020)
Producer: Vikram Malhotra
Starring: Vidya Balan (Shakuntala
Devi), Sanya Malhotra (Anupama Banerjee), Jisshu Sengupta (Paritosh Banerjee),
Amit Sadh (Ajay).
The biopic on the ‘human
computer’, Shakuntala Devi is amazing.
The movie starts in 1934, where
5-year-old Shakuntala is solving problems a 12th grader can’t solve.
Then Shakuntala is invited to do a few math shows. 20 years later, in 1954, she
is continuing to do math shows and the next year she moves to London. She
continues her math shows there with a Spanish man named Javier. In India,
Shakuntala meets Paritosh, a man and shortly marries him. Once in 1970, her
daughter Anupama or Anu for short, is born. Shakuntala continues the math shows
worldwide, robbing Anu of her childhood, just like Shakuntala’s parents did to
her. Want to know more? WATCH THE MOVIE!
I like the plot of the movie. The
representation of the mother-daughter relationship is great. The actor chosen
for Devi’s role is perfect. No actor except Vidya Balan could suit for the
role. Javier’s nickname given by Shakuntala, ‘J-silent’ is very funny. The
songs, however, were inappropriate because they weren’t played at the time it
was supposed to be played. Shakuntala’s skill of math without any formal
education is crazy, but it also was a reason for some of her arrogance.
Shakuntala’s catchphrase, ‘I never lose.’ is a reference to her smug side. I
think the poster could be improved. Hey, why couldn’t you delay the release
rather than release it direct-to-video (oh, I found an answer to my own
question, which is that everyone can watch it). Shakuntala Devi had a good
release date, which I liked. The flaws are:
- The songs were nice, but inappropriate.
- The poster was poor.
- There was too much CGI. I do not like that.
I
wholeheartedly recommend this movie because:
- It has a good plot.
- It has PERFECT casting.
- It jumped between 2 timelines (1934-1989 and 1998-2001), which is a good way to represent the link between the events.
- It has great acting.
- Overall, THE MOVIE IS SUPERB!
Amazing, Ishaan. You have narrated the movie in perfect words. Your style is too good. Great.. You are doing it consistently. All d best. 👏👏
