Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005)

Director: Tim Burton

Producers: Richard D. Zanuck, Lorne Oleans, Brad Grey.

Starring: Freddie Highmore (Charlie), Johnny Depp (Willy Wonka), Phillip Wiegratz (Augustus Gloop), AnnaSophia Robb (Violet Beauregarde), Julia Winter (Veruca Salt), Jordan Fry (Mike Teavee).

The 2nd film edition of Roald Dahl’s most famous book, Charlie and The Chocolate Factory (1964) is an amazing adventure in a factory.

The movie opens with a description of Charlie Bucket (our hero) and Mr Willy Wonka, chocolate maker extraordinaire.  When Wonka announces that he has hidden 5 Golden Tickets underneath random Wonka chocolate bars in any of the 194 countries on Earth, the whole world sets on a chocolate-buying spree. Over a week’s time period, 4 golden tickets were found. The winners included:

  •        Greedy boy Augustus Gloop from Dusseldorf, Germany.
  •       Overconfident gum-chewer Violet Beauregarde from Atlanta, Georgia, USA.
  •      Spoiled girl Veruca Salt from Buckinghamshire, England
  •       TV and video game addict Mike Teavee from Denver, Colorado, USA.

The final golden ticket is found by-let’s face it- Charlie! On the golden ticket, it is also stated that the winner will receive a special award.  Who will be the winner of and what is the prize? Want to know this? Watch the movie!

I like the movie’s method of casting. It has a British actor (Freddie Highmore), American actors (Johnny Depp, AnnaSophia Robb, Jordan Fry), a German actor (Phillip Wiegratz) and a Swedish actor (Julia Winter). I think it makes the flavour of the film come alive. The character of Wilbur Wonka is amazing. Along with a factory tour full of surprises, it also shows an estranged father/son relationship. Great, right? Another father/son relationship was in another film directed by Tim Burton, Big Fish (2003).  Like the review for Brave, I am going to share some trivia here. Did you know that many actors including Adam Sandler and Jim Carrey were in discussion for the role of Willy Wonka before Johnny Depp came in? And do you know before David Kelly was cast for Grandpa Joe, Gregory Peck was going to play the character but Peck died in 2003, before filming began?

I wholeheartedly recommend this movie because;

  1.        It sticks to the book The 1971 version didn’t.
  2.        It has realistic acting.
  3.        It has a good involvement of Wilbur Wonka.
  4.        The screenplay of the film is perfect.
  5.        Overall, THE MOVIE IS SUPERB!
