The movie in a movie, Lightyear (2022) is great!

The movie starts off by saying that Lightyear is a movie in the Toy Story universe, and Buzz Lightyear from Toy Story was just merchandise for that movie.

4.3 million light-years away from Earth in the far future, Buzz Lightyear and Alisha Hawthorne are space rangers, set out to find new habitable worlds for humans. They crash-land on a planet which is habitable, but supposedly has no intelligent life-forms. Buzz then complains a bit about how he hates autopilot systems and rookies, but then Alisha reveals what she brought a rookie along with her, Buzz complains hard. Later, as they where exploring, a slithering, sentient green vine tugs on and pulls Buzz, and he somehow escapes. As he, the rookie, and Alisha escape to the starship jokingly called ‘the turnip’, the ship crashes into a cliff, and the 1200-person crew of the starship is marooned on the planet, named T’kani Prime.

A few years later, Buzz tries to achieve lightspeed with a new fuel cell formula, but his ship burns up at 0.7c (c meaning the speed of light), but after that he realizes 4 years have passed on T’kani, because of time dilation. He receives a gift from Alisha: a robotic cat named Sox. Want to know more? Watch the movie!

I loved this movie, and I also like how they handled scientific concepts like time dilation, and how it increases how fast you go. The montage of Buzz going on a hyperspeed trial, returning after 4 years, and Alisha driving him home and showing a progress in her relationship with fellow space ranger named Kiko was decent. The main flaws were:

·         Not to sound homophobic, but the LGBT relationship between Alisha and Kiko seemed pretty forced, and it would be just as good if it had been offhandedly mentioned like in Onward, and

·         The movie really, could do with a song or two.

I wholeheartedly recommend this movie because:

1.       This movie is epic.

2.       The battle with Zurg is also pretty good. If you didn’t know Zurg is – oops! No spoilers!

3.       The spaceship design and the character design is also great.

4.       The worldbuilding is great. And the Pixar hair, - oh my great god.

5.       Overall, THIS MOVIE IS EPIC!
