Hotel Transylvania (2012)

Cast: Adam Sandler (Dracula), Selena Gomez (Mavis), Andy Samberg (Jonathan), Kevin James (Frankenstein), David Spade (Griffin), Steve Buscemi (Wayne) Sadie Sandler (Young Mavis, Winnie Werewolf).

A fun movie, Hotel Transylvania is the best movie executed about Dracula.

It’s 1895, the Count tries his best to ‘peekaboo’ a baby Mavis (Dracula’s daughter) but makes the baby cry. Over the years, Drac develops and builds Hotel Transylvania, in (as you might have guessed) Transylvania, Romania. He also has a very valid reason for building a hotel: to give monsters a break from hiding from humanity, and to protect Mavis.

1898. the hotel is finally built and the architect confirms that the hotel is totally human-proof.

2012. The hotel is running very smoothly and all the monsters are having the time of their lives. Drac welcomes his friends Frank, Wayne, Murray, and Griffin the Invisible man. The next day, which is Mavis’s 118th birthday, the birthday girl decides to go out into the world, which her dad had earlier forbid her to do. Drac sets up a fake village with his zombie associates to convince Mavis that humans are terrible. Unfortunately, a human named Jonathan enters along with the zombies and according to the Count, the monsters’ lives are at stake. The rest of the movie is yours to watch.

Though the movie has terrible attempts at comedy, I praise it for the originality and the characters. Just everything is good… save for the comedy. Anyways, I like all the monsters, especially Griffin. But the movie has too many butt jokes. There is also a part where (spoiler alert) while taking a shower, the Invisible Man applies some powder on his rear end. So, I think that scene is inappropriate. Sony Pictures Animation cut that scene but Prime Video plugged it again. Please note this is just a hypothesis, since I had watched this movie on YouTube and it didn’t have that scene. Johnny is the best, because he’s not totally paranoid in sticky situations. Dracula is pretty one-dimensional, so I don’t really like him (and he isn’t fun). I think the movie was a bit more mediocre than the sequels. Although, this was just the start of an exceedingly well-done franchise. The only flaw is the comedy.

I wholeheartedly recommend this movie because:

  1.       The characters are amazing.
  2.       The movie is directed by Gennady Tartakovsky, the creator of the much-beloved Dexter’s Laboratory.
  3.       The scenes are very corny and fun, especially the ‘scream cheese’ one.
  4.       The song at the end is quite perfect.
  5.       Overall, THE MOVIE IS FERB-ULOUS (yes, ferb-ulous is a rating, that means for me it is as good as Phineas and Ferb)!
