Sleeping Beauty (1959)

Director: Clyde Geronimi

Producer: Walt Disney

Cast: Mary Costa (Aurora), Eleanor Audley (Maleficent), Verna Felton (Flora) Barbara Jo Allen (Fauna), Barbara Luddy (Merryweather)

The movie, based on the original fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm, is the 16th Disney film (and the oldest film in my collection up till now (though there will be more older movies)).

The movie started with an opening narration about King Stefan, Queen Leah and Princess Aurora. The movie then cut to the time where baby Aurora was being blessed by the three good fairies (gift): Flora (beauty), Fauna (song), but Maleficent interrupted. She argued about not being invited and she ‘blessed’ Aurora by saying that before sunset, on Aurora’s 16th birthday, will prick her finger on a spindle of a sewing machine and die! Merryweather, the last fairy said she couldn’t undo the curse, but lessen its effect. She said that Aurora will just go into a deep sleep. Want to know more? Watch the movie!

I liked the movie itself. The quotes were very bizarre (and funny at the same time). Here’s one:

Prince Phillip: “Now father, you’re living in the past. This is the 14th century.”

This is just ONE of at least 20 quotes in the movie! Anyway, back to the topic. Traditionally animated movies are so tricky to make. 3D effects and all! This movie was no less (probably). This is also the first film I ever watched which was produced by Walt Disney. The cliff-hanger parts were very mysterious. The movie also had its downsides; one being that the movie was very repetitive.  Sleeping Beauty (originally called Briar Rose in the fairy tale) now had a different name: Aurora. This movie was the 3rd Disney film to have a painstaking computer restoration. After all, trivia is always interesting. Flawless movie….

I wholeheartedly recommend this movie because:

  1.      It has a good plot.
  2.      It has fairly good voice acting.
  3.      It has many funny parts.
  4.     It is inspired by not only the story by Charles Perrault, but also by music by Tchaikovsky.
  5.     Overall, THE MOVIE IS AMAZING!
