Image
Director: Robert Zemeckis Producers: Robert Zemeckis, Guillermo del Toro, Alfonso Cuaron, Jack Rapke, Luke Kelly Cast: Anne Hathaway (Grand High Witch), Chris Rock, Jahzir Bruno (Unnamed protagonist), Octavia Spencer (Hero’s grandmother), Codie-Lei Eastick (Bruno Jenkins), Kristin Chenoweth (Mary a.k.a Daisy). Amazing. Great. Ingenious. A man is showing a gaggle of kids a slideshow about witches. He then begins to recount his encounter with witches. It’s Chicago, 1968. A car overturns and while the parents do not survive the accident, the man (as a boy) lives through the crash. He is taken by his grandma who lives in Demopolis, and is described as a person who would give a good spanking or a warm hug based on your actions. One day, Grandma buys the boy a cute little white rat, who is known as Daisy. One day, to make a house for Daisy, the boy heads for the supermarket to buy nails. At the market, Grandma tells the boy to get rust-proof nails. The boy there has his first encou...

Life of Pi (2012)

Director: Ang Lee Producers: Gill Netter, Ang Lee, David Womark Cast: Irrfan Khan, Suraj Sharma (Piscine Molitor Patel i.e., Pi Patel), Rafe Spall (Yann Martel). This movie based on the eponymous book by Yann Martel is terrific. An older gentleman named Pi Patel starts telling his story to a Canadian author.                                          Piscine Molitor Patel is a young boy who was named after a swimming pool in Paris that his ‘mamaji’ swam in and called the best pool he ever ‘collected’, which meant the best pool amongst all the pools that he had swam. His father owned a zoo in the botanical gardens and his mother worked as a botanist there. At school, he was teased and jeered at for his name, which sounded like pi****g. He had to endure continuous teasing becau...

Elizabeth Ekadashi (2014)

Image
D irector: Paresh Mokashi Producer: Madhugandha Kulkarni, Nikhil Sane, Nittin Keni Cast: Shrirang Mahajan (Dnyanesh) Amazing. A really well thought out movie, Elizabeth Ekadashi is super! Dnyanesh is a young boy who lives in poverty with his mother, grandmother, and younger sister Mukta. The title’s eponymous bicycle, Elizabeth, was gifted to Dnyanesh by his father, who built that cycle and later, passed away. The cycle remains the only memory of the father that lives on with them. As I said, the financial condition of the family is very weak, so Dnyanesh’s mother does some odd jobs to help to keep the household running. One day, as the mother is unable to repay the loan taken for a sweater machine, the bank takes the sweater machine away, making the family lose their only source of income. Another day, Dynanesh asks his mother if he could set up a bangle shop to overcome the financial needs of 5000 rupees but his mother is very angry at Dnyanesh and tells him to focus on studi...

Aladdin (2019) Director: Guy Ritchie Producers: Jonathan Eirich, Ivan Atkinson, Dan Lin, Kevin De La Noy. Cast: Men Massoud (Aladdin), Naomi Scott (Princess Jasmine), Will Smith (Genie), Marwan Kenzari (Jafar) Simply awesome. Mind-blowing. Amazing. I haven’t watched the 1992 version, so I can’t judge better or not. Read the review now. A mariner starts to tell his two children a story about a boy named Aladdin, in ancient Persia. Aladdin is a young boy who lost both his parents when he was a baby, with his sole friend being a monkey named Abu. Once he sees a girl who robs two pieces of bread for a pair of kids to eat. The shopkeeper notices and sends the bodyguards to chase down the girl and Aladdin (who just steals the girl’s bracelet.). Aladdin, with the help of the girl, jumps and runs his way to his hideout in an under construction building which was abandoned a long time ago. At his house, Aladdin correctly identifies that the girl from the palace. Later, the sul...
