Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004)

Director: Alfonso Cuaron

Cast: Daniel Radcliffe (Harry) Rupert Grint (Ron) Emma Watson (Hermione) Gary Oldman

(Sirius Black).

An epic movie based on the book by the same name (published in 1999), Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban is great!

The movie starts with Harry pumping up his ‘aunt’ Marge and throwing her into space. In a fit of rage, he leaves the Dursleys, with his Hogwarts stuff. Suddenly Harry realizes he has nowhere to go and out of nowhere a triple-decker wizard bus called the Knight Bus. He puts up an identity of Neville Longbottom, a fellow Gryffindor student at Hogwarts. He finds out that Sirius Black, a murderer he saw on TV the earlier day, is on the loose as he has escaped from Azkaban, the wizard prison on a desolate island that was considered unbreakable. The Dementors, the guards of Azkaban with their soul-sucking kiss are wandering around the wizarding world, looking for Sirius Black. At Hogwarts, Harry learns that:

1.       He has 2 new subjects, Care of Magical Creatures taught by the gamekeeper Rubeus Hagrid, and Divination, taught by the weird and overly superstitious Sybill Trelawney.

2.       Third-years and above are allowed to visit the nearby village called Hogsmeade.

3.       Hogwarts will temporarily be playing host to the Dementors of Azkaban.

So cool! I knew that Sirius Black’s appearance will be fun. Remus Lupin, Harry’s new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher, is actually very smart, and he’s my second-favorite character, the most favorite being Neville Longbottom. The part where it is revealed that Professor Minerva McGonagall is an Animagus who can turn into a tabby cat is very, very, silly? The Boggart (a creature that can transform into the thing you are the most afraid of) was very funny. Here are some people’s Boggarts.

·         Neville Longbottom – Severus Snape (the Potions teacher)

·         Padma Patil – A snake

·         Parvati Patil – Mummy

·         Dean Thomas – Disembodied hand

·         Ron Weasley – Giant spider

·         Harry Potter – Dementor

Amazing.  I really liked the fact that it was given more time to spare for production because Chamber of secrets, that released just after Philosopher’s stone, felt a bit rushed, but this one didn’t. I also liked The Marauder’s Map, a map that can track the movements of anyone inside Hogwarts and when combined with an Invisibility Cloak and a wand, becomes all-powerful. No flaws at all.

I wholeheartedly recommend this movie because:

1.       The actors are now a bit more adapted to the environment and so the acting was top-notch.

2.       The plotline was awesome, but a few memorable moments were not captured properly.

3.       The setting is extreme.

4.       The village of Hogsmeade is amazing!

5.       Overall, THIS MOVIE IS RIDDIKULUSLY AMAZING
